About DrScissorhands

Hi, I'm Rick Nelson of DrScissorhands. I started doing furniture upholstery work when I was 18. Working with all kinds of materials; fine silks, tapestries, leather, cording, welt, and many others, I found the need to have my textile shears and scissors sharpened often. Carpal Tunnel Syndrome was becoming a "norm" at the time, in many fields where artists used the repetitive motions that it takes to do their jobs, whether it be Sewing and Crafting, Hair Design/Cutting, Upholstery Work, Floral Design, Pet Groomers, Automobile Detailers, Tailors, Seamstresses, and even Carpet Layers. I saw this growing trend among my co-workers, and others that use scissors and/or shears. I knew there had to be a better way! Thus, I learned to sharpen my own scissors and shears as well as perfecting methods for gaining sharpness and durability, greatly reducing the stress on my wrists, hands, and fingers. Precision sharpening and honing of my scissors/shears reduced the amount of time, effort, and ultimately, long term wrists, hand and finger pain, which is usually seen after the repetitive motions of using shears or scissors daily. It also improved the quality and consistency of my work.

My co-workers began to ask me to sharpen their shears, scissors, and sewing snips, even though they could have all of these services done for FREE at the company that they were currently employed by. However, the in-house sharpening wasn't always done correctly, and I found myself correcting mistakes made by other sharpeners. In the beginning, I did not charge my co-workers for his sharpening services but, I was offered tips by the other employees. The demand for my services began to grow more and more as word of mouth spread to other furniture manufacturers in the area, even my own hair stylists asked me what I could do to her Beauty Shears. Increasingly, every evening after work, I found myself sharpening scissors and shears for hours, correcting previous sharpening errors, reconditioning and repairing them as needed. That was the beginning of DrScissorhands.
